Pilots Manual for Northrop P-61 Black Widow Airplane
Published in Paperback by Aviation Book Co (December, 1973)
Author: Michael S Rice
Average review score:

A useful book for the historian (military or pilot).
This book is more than just a manual in that it starts with a brief history of the P-61, then goes to the actual manual which emcompasses an introduction to aircraft systems, then basic operations from walk around check to flight characteristics to release of external stores. In this age of poorly written manuals I was surprised at how clear this manual is. It will add a dimension to your understanding of the P-61 unavailable in (but complimentary to) other sources. It will be appreciated by military historians and pilots (who could compare aircraft operations with their modern "twins"). Very "large scale" modelers might also find the detailed cockpit photos useful. If you are very interested in the Black Widow you should own this book.

Proceedings of the EXXON Valdez Oil Spill Symposium: Held at Anchorage, Alaska, USA, 2-5 February 1993
Published in Hardcover by American Fisheries Society (January, 1996)
Author: Stanley D. Rice
Average review score:

The EXXON Valdez Oil Spill Symposium, 1993
This is a comprehensive 931 page indexed scientific publication consisting of the results of investigations largely supported by the EXXON Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council. The Council consists of representatives from various federal and Alaska State entities. The work is edited by S.D. Rice, R.B. Spies, D.A. Wolf, and B.A. Wright, who also co-author the introductory paper. The work consists of roughly 60 papers grouped in the topics of Fate and Toxity, Intertidal, Treatment Effects, Subtidal, Herring, Salmon, Other Fish, Birds, Mammals, Archaeology, Subsistence, and Human Impacts. Absent are investigations sponsored by EXXON Corp. and a few sponsored by private plaintiffs. EXXON presented most of its sponsored investigations in a separate ASTM Symposium. All in all the work is comprehensive, but for many of the investigations, the work was conducted simply too soon to reach scientifically definitive conclusions regarding cause and effect. Fortunately many of the authors were able to not let the perfect be the enemy of the good, and did not ignore the obvious.

Average review score:

A brief overview of qualitative research methods
I found this short, readable book a good introduction toqualitative research methods, and the philosophies which underliethem. The book also contains sections on how to write a research grant, and how to write an academic paper, and the advice given is good and sensible. There is an extensive, thorough bibliography. For people needing an introduction to what qualitative research is about, the book is ideal.

Ransomed Warrior
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (December, 1999)
Author: John E. Rice
Average review score:

Real morality takes guts!
"Real morality takes guts." (p. 224). This is a profoundly moral book that is sorting out the choices people (especially men in this story) make. One can feel throughout the book that the author is coming from a deep sense of faith in religious, personal values long associated with simple working class, farm, rural, mountain people in the American South. "All the rustic learning in his growing years was to be anything but a fraud...A man's word was his sacred honor." (The passages of respect for women should be in schools for discussion with young people.) As we read this story, we too are gripped by a nostalgia to "drink from the old well the water that was magic with its power to restore feelings of well being." (p. 171). And there is poetry, "The murmur of pines in a summer breeze always seems to sing of eternity." (p. 243). With the scope of Biblican history, John Rice takes us from the ancient hills of Judea to Shands Cove in Southern Appalachia.

Sake Companion
Published in Hardcover by Running Press (15 November, 2000)
Author: John Gauntner
Average review score:

A nice (but short) intro to the world of saké
This compact, concise book is a nice starting point if you're interested in delving into the multifaceted, complex world of saké. The author makes clear the many classifications and styles that this ancient Japanese beverage can have, in a way that's (hopefully) not too confusing to the novice. The directory of Japanese and American sakés he includes later in the book (listed by brewery, and including bottle label pictures) gives enough info to make a informed decision on which saké(s) you should try to find, depending on your preferences. He also provides the reader with plenty of references in the way of saké organization addresses and websites, etc. However, my biggest gripe with this slim volume is the lack of explanation of any of the Kanji (Japanese symbolic characters) which correspond to the classifications he describes earlier in the book. On a saké bottle label, not only are the brewery and saké names written in Kanji and Hiragana (a simpler Japanese alphabet), but the classification and style often are as well. Thus, knowledge of what the Kanji for "junmai" is, for example, is essential in many cases, and should've been included in this book.
